2020 TORA 8 Hours of Indianapolis
The Brickyard. If those two simple words don't put a smile on your face, you must be living under a rock! Indianapolis Motor Speedway has been at the heart of American motorsport since it's opening in 1909. Initially a dirt track, the rectangular oval has been resurfaced many times, including most famously as bricks. While the track now is a traditional paved surface, the yard of bricks remains an iconic image, with drivers risking life and limb to earn the right to kiss the bricks. Indianapolis has claimed 73 lives over the past 111 years, including 58 during the Indianapolis 500 event, and of those 73, 42 drivers. The speeds are astronomical, the walls are unforgiving, and the corners know no equal.
In more recent years, the infield road course, or "Roval", has been used across open-wheel, motorcycle, and sports car series. Formula One held the first Grand Prix in 2000, with a crowd in excess of 225,000 in attendance. It was not always smooth sailing, as arguably the most farcical F1 race ever ran in 2005, with all Michelin runners opting not to start after Ralf Schumacher's massive accident in practice. Earlier this year, NASCAR ran on the road course for the first time, and the Intercontinental GT Challenge held the inaugural 8 Hours of Indianapolis this summer.
That takes us to today, and TORA's inaugural endurance race on the Indianapolis GP circuit! We will be using the Formula One era circuit, referred to in Forza as "Indy GP - Classic". See below for a track map. The car list for this event last saw action at Daytona in 2019, and will provide a stiff challenge for drivers. From the high speed and razor-thin grip margins of GTP, to the brute force on GTO, great care must be taken on both the banked section and the twisted infield.
Good luck to all!
Race - This is an 8-hour endurance race. Drivers will be competing in 4 stints of 2 hours each. Drivers are reminded that the actual driving time is 1 hour and 40 minutes. Drivers are reminded that they are to use THE STINT THREAD to assign stints to each of their drivers. You can see the stint schedule on the stint thread. Drivers are expected to be familiar with the rules and regulations come race time, so please review them before December 5th. Drivers are also reminded that they cannot have a driver double stint between stints 3 & 4.
Pit Stops - All drivers in both classes must stop 3 times per stint, with the final pit stop beginning prior to 30 minutes remaining on the in-game race clock. If a driver misses the pit entrance, they are not permitted to drive backwards to enter the pit lane, and must instead drive another full lap to properly enter the pits. Drivers are reminded to use the pit lane entry lane, and to not cut over the white line on pit exit.
Track Limits - Image credit: racingcircuits.info. For all circuits, the track limits are FORZA CLEAN. No track extensions of any kind that results with a "dirty" lap will be permitted.
Stint Starting Procedures - Stint 1 will begin with a full warm-up lap behind the safety car, at 80 MPH (129 KPH), concluding with the safety car reaching the pit-lane entrance just before the final corner. Once the safety car reaches this point, or the lead row of cars hits that same point, the field will drop to 60 MPH (96 KPH) in a 2x2 formation. Once each row hits the start/finish line, they will accelerate and begin racing. Stints 2-4 will be a single file start at 60 MPH (96 KPH), with each car accelerating at the bridge on the middle straight. Remember that drivers are not to accelerate to race pace until THEY pass the designated start point.
Stint 1 - This is where the field forms at 60MPH 2x2
It's the start of the curb on the right!
Stints 2-4 - This is where the field begins to race.
It's the big shadow!
Pit Exit Line - Do not cut this!
It's theT!
